Romania is going through a bit of a highway renaisance, a lot of kilometers (or miles if you prefer) are being built in recent times, and that is helping facilitate resource transportation and, most importantly, for you. Travelling to different parts of Romania in a reasonable time by renting cars.

Green – functioning, Orange – under construction and Black – bidding for the project

Romania today has 1.276 km of highways and express roads. They are depicted above in the color green. Orange are the roads under construction, and black are the ones that are waiting for contractors. We are the 18th country in Europe with the most amount of highways (Link).

Currently, if you rent a car in Cluj, you can visit quite a few cities in Transylvania. Once highways are connected, you will be able to start your trip in Bucharest and visit most of the country by doing a tour. Sibiu is absolutely amazing and has plenty of scenery and medieval fortresses to offer.

Why are highways such a big deal? Safety issues… Romania is one of the least safe places to drive in the EU, and one of the reasons is people driving fast on roads that are not wide enough.
