I was once asked why are there so many cats in Bucharest, and I said: I don’t think there are a lot of cats, but then again, I am used to seeing cats. And the next day, guess what popped up on my facebook feed: (Top EU countries with households that have a cat)

After more digging, I had a sudden realisation that Romania is a very cat centric country.

Even on the world stage, we are doing quite well (I know that these stats are from 2012) but I choose to be the best!

Stats vary a bit from source to source, but what I can confirm is we have a lot of cats!

Does Romania have it’s own cat breed?

The answer is no (update: not yet), Romania does not have it’s own domesticated cat breeds… But, the good news is we have some wild breeds in the wilderness.

Update: Transylvanian Cat will be established as a breed once more research has been made ( link source )

A subspecies of Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx carpathicus)

The second-most amount of lynxes you can find in Europe outside Russia are located in Romania.
