Vama Veche is a small town close to the border with Bulgaria on the Romanian seaside. A place where historically students have gathered to play music, drink alcohol, and forget about all those rough days at university. Today, it is more of a resort where young people and people that listen to more underground music go and have a good summer time.
What are the pros and cons?
It is a party place

PROS
When it comes to Vama the first thing that comes to mind to most people is freedom. Each night the clubs are waiting for you, along with a series of Romanian excess when it comes to alcohol and other substances. Falling asleep on the beach is also a thing.
People will act as if you’ve been friends with them for a lifetime, they’re there to have fun and enjoy the experience. The atmosphere is so relaxed that its fit for solo travel as well.
CONS
It is very loud, so if you are there just to chill and get a good night’s sleep, forget about it. Also, the excess might reach a total new level. Compared to other countries, Romania has a strict policy regarding drugs. We do not really recommend diving deep into them, since the police are constantly keeping an eye on you. Also, if you are traveling solo, don’t consume anything that could lead you to waking up in the morning without cash in your wallet.
After a night of partying there will be bottles all around the beach, it’s not the cleanest place.
It is more alternative

PROS
It has more of an undreground vibe, you won’t see that often your tipical manele guy, in case you are tired of Mamaia posers, or of Balkans flashing their expensive cars. Overall, it feels more genuine.
CONS
There is also a beach for nudists. Might be a con if you have a problem with it. It is also not the best place to bring your kids.
Bulgaria is super close if you want to hit 2 birds with 1 stone
PROS
Some of the reasons of why you should visit Dracula’s neighbour includes:
- Bulgaria also offers cheaper eating options and some restaurants have a really nice view. Take a look at Ferma de midii (Google Maps), where you will eat cheap and fresh sea food. You will also seat right near the sea. They also take Romanian currency.
- Nearby you also have attractions if you feel like visiting more. Here is Cap Kaliakra (Google Maps) for instance:

CONS
You will need a car to reach it. You might also spend a bit of time at the border, depending on the day and hour.
It’s ok if you are on a budget

PROS:
Sandalandala for instance offers a great safe camping spot with clean bathroom, showers and the possibility to rent per day also a tent if you do not feel like coming with your own. You can book through booking and also find there more of their facilities.
CONS:
Unfortunately, the hotel prices are a bit high if camping is not your thing, especially if you do not book in advance.
