The history of Romania is deeply connected to the Carpathian Mountains, our folk ballads were preserved in the mountains (Miorita ballad as an example) by shepherds. Shepherding is one of our oldest activities that has continued throughout the ages. Guess what? We have our own types of dog breeds!

All of these dogs have been used to protect sheep in the mountains, and all of these dogs have grown to large sizes to ward off bears. They are the type of dogs that put fear in your heart if their owner is not nearby.
Ciobanesc Carpatin – Carpathian Shepherd Dog
It looks like a scared dog, but all these breads are not afraid of bears and can get territorial if you get too close to their sheep or sheepfold.
Ciobanesc Mioritic – Mioritic Shepherd Dog
This dog was actually developed through selective breeding, and the name comes from the Miorita ballad I mentioned beforehand. Miorita is the name of the sheep in the story, but the word mioritic nowadays is used to describe the lands of Romania. I wasn’t joking when I said our culture runs deep in the mountains.
Ciobanesc Romanesc de Bucovina – Romanian Shepherd Dog from Bucovina
Similar to the Carpatin Shepherd dog this one is specific to the beautiful Bucovina area.
Ciobanesc Corb – The Crow Shepherd
This Shepherd dog is similar to the rest, the color being the main distinguishing factor as it is dark black. Also, it is the only dog breed that is not acknowledged at an international level.
