Is Romania in the European Union?
Yes. On January 1, 2007, Romania, together with its neighbor Bulgaria, officially joined the European Union as a Member State, successfully concluding a process that had been initiated in the mid-1990s, as per the predetermined schedule.

Is Romania in Schengen?
No. (update: Yes… ish) Currently, Romania and Bulgaria are applying to be part of the Schengen Area. Austria denied Romania entrance into the Schengen area (Dracula is unhappy about this…). At present, the Schengen Area includes the majority of EU nations, with the exceptions being Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, and Romania.
Update: Yes…ish Romania is part of Air Schengen and Naval Schengen (31st March) which means you will get no border checks between flights within the EU (fun fact: you get checked anyway in an airport), So Romania and Bulgaria are in poor man’s Schengen. We hope to update our entrance in the near future.

Is Romania part of NATO?
Yes. Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia received invitations to commence accession negotiations during the Alliance’s Prague Summit in 2002. On March 29, 2004, they formally joined NATO, marking the most extensive enlargement in the history of the organization.
