Painted Eggs

Originally painted red as a symbol of Christ’s blood, painted eggs have evolved with time. Those who have the pleasure and talent turn them into a works of art!

Deviled eggs

Romanians love these tasty filled up savory treats, each family has their favorite filling, ranging from tuna to mayo to pate. Not very Romanian but a must have during Easter holidays.

Drob

Romanian Lamb Haggis it is normally eaten with horse radish beats, heavy on the stomach and on the heart but not on the soul.

Beouf Salad

Salată Beouf, Olivier Salad, or Russian Salad is one of those recipes that have their place in Eastern Europe. It is said that it was developed by a French chef for the royal court in Russia, travelled hundreds of kilometers and since then Romania goes crazy for it, especially during holidays. With heavy mayo and meat, what is not to like?

Chiftelute (Meatballs)

The best meatballs for Easter are, of course, the ones with mayo and onion. It sounds unhealthy but this is the way!

Couldn’t find a picture of the ones with mayo, this is how good they are!

Ciorba de vitel (Beef soup)

My father always says, no meal is complete without a soup… you could have a lamb soup but it requires a really good cook, so beef is sometimes the safe option when cooking for Easter.

Sarmale (Cabbage Rolls)

It is our Romanian national dish, it never leaves our side on important holidays. One of the Top Romanian Foods , the king of flavor, if it’s made of course by my grandma!

Stufat

Lamb and herb stew, the magic behind this recipe is the use of herbs like wild garlic and green onions. Dracula hates this dish…

Lamb Aspic

Jellied foods are really popular in Eastern Europe. Generally aspic is something nice to have during winter holidays but a lamb aspic just goes well during Easter!

Cozonac

Sweet bread is made of this, who am I to disagree?

Pasca

There are many versions out there, depending on the region you come from, but everyone can agree that the sweet cheese and raisins is the most popular one. I prefer the chocolate one, my mom does a savory version, there are ones online without a crust, so you just need to find the one that makes you happy!

Lichiu

Also known as Hanklich, this recipe is a dessert made mostly in Transylvania by the German population.

Alba ca Zapada (Snow White Cake)

This is the Romanian lemon cake, also called lămâiță or little lemon, it is an old recipe but not that old as we don’t have lemons in Romania historically.

Pro tip: Easter usually comes after a period of fasting, so don’t expect to find vegan food on the table… You will need to communicate in advance for that.
