Flavors of Romania

Charley Ottley oozes out love for Romania, and that love just pops out in this documentary. He meets the right people and he pays homage to everything that the country has to offer. The documentary series is done the right way: heartfelt with a focus on people.

Available on Netflix

Wild Romania

What is not to love about a nature documentary? It showcases amazing animals and the beautiful landscapes.

Available on HBO

The New Gypsy King

Manele is viewed by Romanians as a type of music that lacks taste, the funny thing is after a couple shots of palinca same people will dance like crazy on manele. Manele is up beat Turkish music with interesting lyrics in a flashy world, where throwing money to the singer is a sign of prowess and getting to the top involves having to deal with unsavory individuals.

It was made by the BBC so you might be able to view it there if you are in the UK. Found this link on facebook to view it, it was difficult to find a trailer, so it might not be available anymore. If you encounter issues message me in the comment section.

Recorder

These guys have some really good investigative journalism, but I chose this documentary as an analysis of Romania. More than 30 years of democracy in Romania and asking people what we have to show for it is fascinating. Communism left an impact on us and trying this thing called democracy is complicated so, turn on the subtitles, put your seatbelt on and go on a journey.

Collective

Colectiv (Collective translated) used to be a club, a fire started, people died and all the problems of Romania came to light. One government fell, international community mobilized but unfortunately, few things changed. It’s a bit of a roller-coaster ride but if you want a well-done documentary this is something to watch.

Available on HBO and on Youtube
