Why you should hike in Romania?

To be frank, Romania is not fun in terms of infrastructure, but hiking is a totally different story, you get to know the country and the culture in a way that you can’t by just a trip to the capital.

What is Via Transilvanica?

It is a project, similar to The Camino de Santiago, promoted by an arctic ultra-marathon runner Tiberiu Ușeriu. You can travel from the North of Romania to the South by walking this route in 55 days. The path is well maintained, well documented and you can stay at locals and/or bed and breakfasts.

The complete guide

You can find it online on their site here.

What you need to know is that it gives you information about hosts, how to get there, GPS coordinates, difficulty, alternatives, explanations in 4 different languages (Romanian, Hungarian, English and German), a bit of history and what to do to avoid dogs from the shepherds in certain areas.

What to expect?

An adventure! I have been on the path for a total of 12 days, and I have met cool people, ate at locals, drank the alcohol, got scared by dogs, discovered my own country in a deeper, more meaningful way, monuments, amazing views, experienced the changes in accents, developed deeper friendships with my traveling buddies, learnt to push my limits, realized I hate my friends when they sing trap music, ate forest fruits, told stories, went to church, sinned, and overall was just happy to follow the (T) that shows the way on the path.

Later edit: Cool video from the Via Transilvanica Team that explains a bit more
