When I think of street food, I think of hot dogs, skewers, burgers and even pop corn. Other than the most common street foods, we have some suggestions that Romanians really love! Some of these recipes are not very Romanian but are consumed like crazy by us, the Romanian people.
Hamsie
Summer is close by and wanted to start the list with one of the most common street food on the seaside: fried anchovies.
Mici
It’s no secret we love mici… We wrote an article about mici… Romanians love mici! Mici, mici, mici!
Covrigi
Romanians love bread so guess what, the Romanian version of a pretzel is something that we love! One of my fondest childhood memory was to go and buy bread for my grandma and, of course, sneak in a pretzel! There are multiple types of covrigi but below is my favorite shape:
Saorma (Shwarma)
I know, I know, very popular street food around the world, but I would like to remind you that we have a Turkish, Syrian and Lebanese minorities, which can bring some magical shawarmas to life!
Merdenele
Filo pastries with cheese inside… What more can you ask?
Covridog
Well, the Americans might have invented the hotdog but the past few years Romanians have perfected it! You get some dough and stuff it with a hot dog, or with other stuff to get more experimental.
Kurtos
The largest minority of Romania, the Hungarians, have created this amazing desert in the region of Transylvania. You might know it as a chimney cake, but it is a thin, sweet bread made over a fire. It is delicious! It is amazing!
Dobrogeana
Another filo pastry on our list, the dobrogeana, can be sweet or salty, but what truly makes it special is the ratio of dough to cheese. Only the best pastry chefs can master the perfect ratio for this simple recipe!
Corn on the cob
My biggest culinary shock was when I visited the US and found out that most of the world eats sweet corn, In Romania we use a corn that is savory and the same applies to what corn we eat on the cob. When summer is close by we eat these bad boys boiled or on the grill with salt and sometimes butter.
