You want to learn Romanian? Or want to get a vibe of the region? Well, the best thing ever is the experience of watching some TV series produced in Romania or some stories from Romania. The biggest challenge in finding the best TV series for foreigners to watch is the access to subtitles…
Umbre – Shadows (HBO)
Dark, gritty, TV series from Romania. It does have a very Balkan vibe but with a very brooding main character.
Comrade Detective (Amazon Prime)
It is more of a parody, Chaning Tatum is doing the voice over for the Romanian actors, but the fact that this looks so serious just makes me wonder, did this really happen? Obviously no, but it is very funny, and the whole set looks as communist as communist can be.
Spymaster (HBO)
Based on the escape of the general Pacepa, it showcases the process to get the leader of the Romanian version of the CIA out of the country. Just to clarify, there are plenty of artistic liberties taken, as the escape was less dramatic in reality, but you know what? Why not just enjoy the simple pleasures of life? High octane adrenaline!
Flavours of Romania (Netflix)
Charlie Ottley goes across Romania and shares his experience in this outstanding documentary. He deserves a statue, and even though technically speaking it is not a TV series but more of a docuseries, we shall make exceptions for this gem of a human being!
Irina Rimes: On my way (HBO)
I asked once who is Irina Rimes and people made fun of me for being old. Find out about an artist from the Republic of Moldova living in Romania.
