If you are looking for some interesting foreign language literature, Dracula did his best to find something that will satisfy the heart of any avid reader. Here are some of the best books to read if you want to immerse yourself in a Romanian landscape full of sad, happy, and downright strange stories. Being at the intersection of great empires meant surviving, so when survival is your priority life can get complicated.

Set in stone – Stela Brinzeanu

The focus of the book is on combining elements of fiction and folklore with a reinterpretation of a myth that is well-known in both Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Simply put, this is the book to read if you want to immerse yourself in Romanian culture from the comfort of your own home.

A much better writer than me wrote an excellent review of the book: Link

The Land of Green Plums – Herta Muller

Herta Muller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for her work on the hardships faced by German-Romanian communities during communism. The land of green plums explores Romania during the communist regime. The tough nature of the regime is felt in all the elements of day-to-day life and is a perspective on what it means to lose the sense of community.

A Brief Illustrated History of Romanians – Neagu Djuvara

Amazing author, the best Romanian historian. In an interview he interrupted the person interviewing him saying that he could be writing books instead of giving this interview implying that the interview itself is not bringing anything of value. He dedicated his life to writing an accurate account of Romanian history, a history plagued by it’s communist reinterpretation.

La Tava – Irina Georgescu

If you like sweets this is the book for you! Your teeth will not appreciate the delicious sweets but you know, it is better to live as a kid again than to be a boring adult.

Goodbye Ceausescu – Romanin Dutter, Paul Bona, Bouqe

Currently in French and Romanian, it is a comic book worth exploring as it sets you in Romanian post-communism! A lot of interesting stories emerge from a complete change in regime in a country that is trying to adapt to the new capitalist reality it is living.
