From the most iconic to the best-tasting ones, we shall explore the best shawarmas based on the experience of the Dracula team and our love of this tasty midnight snack after a night of partying. Romanian shawarmas usually are more focused on sauce and fries, but the good news is you can choose what you put in. If you want to be a true local, you say “shawarma cu de toate” (with everything) because nothing beats Romanian decadence. The images/reels on this post will be the best we could find, but the information is what sets us apart, for you as tourists, these will be the ones you should put on your list! If you are a local, have a look at the end for the bonus entries.

5.Dristor Kebab

They have been making shawarmas for such a long time; they are the golden standard for shawarmas in Bucharest. If a shawarma is not better than this, then you should not be eating it.

4.Zano Kebab – Use of coal

It is not technically a shawarma on a skewer, but they use a coal fire to cook the meat, and that definitely hits the right spot. They are still new, so for their proximity to old town, they score extra points, but only time will tell if they will be true legends. Romanians love grilling meats with coal, the spices and Middle Eastern flavors give it a more authentic touch, but something is missing in terms of sauces for them to get that top spot. They also do a cheese inside, which… I will explain on my next place on my list…

3.Efendi – Cheese

I personally don’t like cheese in my wraps, but they do a great job and contribute to what makes Romania special in the shawarma game, and that is making it heavy duty. But there are so many people that love this place and so many of my friends that fell in love with this concept, so it can’t be ignored. Cheese is here to stay!

2. Lick Kebab – The veal, garlic sauce and tahini

This place requires you to understand how meat works, what sauce will showcase the quality of the meat. If you keep the sauces simple you won’t have issues. This is my new discovery and went to eat for a second time and was happy the quality didn’t go down. Enjoy this might become an institution in the future!

1.Genin – ram/goat with any sauce your heart desires

It’s the hardest place to get to on the list, but if you take a bus from Piata Romana, you will be there in 20 minutes. For the most iconic shawarma place in Bucharest, a true institution of the skewered meat on the grill. So if you want to have an adventure, this is the place to go. Just know that there is no indoor seating and no place nearby to sit down. Funnily enough, they also have the worst photos for their promos…

Bonus

Places that didn’t make the list because I haven’t been there, or are too far away from Old Town for it to be worth it: Doner Kebab by Chef Nicu Balş, Laziz, Soclului Kebap, La Grasi (nr.1 hidden gem), Fendi, Franco Kebab, Falafilo (nr. 2 hidden gem).
