The night of Saint Andrew between the 29th and 30th of November in Romanian folklore is considered a mystical night where the world of the living is most open to the world of the dead. So, of course, there are a lot of traditions during this period of time having to do with evil spirits, but I will focus in this article on another tradition of finding love. Love is sometimes scarier…
As the boundaries are at most thin, this period is usually associated with the supernatural, and in certain parts of the country, this transition can grant visions of the future. Historically, marriage has always been an important affair, and in the region of Moldova, there are 2 interesting accounts of how one can discover the love of their life.
First method: Before the night of Saint Andrew, unmarried ladies are going to bake a sort of pita made with one part wheat flour, one part water, and one part salt. This magical piece of bread will definitely get you very thirsty and stimulate some dreams and possibly tummy aches. But the purpose is this, in your dream you shall have many visions, and the ones that you are seeking are visions from the future and finding who will be your lover. The lover will be the person that brings water to you in your dreams and quenches your thirst. In my opinion, it is a reminder that love is about the person who also contributes to the relationship and doesn’t just bring the fire in your heart.
The second method involves placing oneself between mirrors (sources suggest 2 or 4) with a candle and praying to St. Andrew. One must be there, ready to see the future with the hair uncombed, trying to find fragments of the future that await and possibly a future partner. If you need another opinion without anthropological basis I think this is a way for one to reflect within.
For more insights on dreams DraculasguidetoRomania is here to help but that requires donations. A palm reader once told me if you don’t pay, you are not invested in your own prophecy.
Will write a part 2 if it is of interest.
