The Ashkenazi Jewish temple, built in 1911 (or 1914) in Constanța, is as old as the Constanța Casino. It is one of Romania’s most beautiful temples but began deteriorating two decades ago due to neglect, including a roof rupture that caused it to collapse at one point. This is the only remaining synagogue in Constanța; the second synagogue, of Sephardic rite, built in the late 1860s, was also in the historic peninsula area but was demolished in 1980 due to earthquake damage, and is now an empty lot used as a parking space.
The good news is to come in the near future, the plan is to place it on the list of protected historical monuments in Romania, and in June 2023, a renovation project has been signed to rehabilitate this architectural gem. I do hope that in the future it will be one of the most beautiful attractions you can see in Constanta and hopefully on our list of top things to see in Dobrogea.
What will it look like? More images can be found at this link.
