I lied! It was more than 10 things…

6.Going to the cemetery on Resurrection day by bringing Light to the dead

Similar to the way Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico (Dias de Los Muertos) on Easter Night after we go to Church. After we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ and receive Light (fire from the candle of a priest symbolizing the divine light), we go to the cemetery and light up the candles from the cemetery of loved ones.

7.Lent before Easter

What is lent? It is a period of eating healthy and preparing yourself spiritually for celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. Not everybody in Romania participates in lent for the full period of time (40 days in total of eating mostly vegan food). During this period you are not allowed to consume animal products, you get some days where you can eat fish and if you are really technical about it you are not allowed oil (most people don’t abide by this rule). It is a good way of getting people to stay healthy but there might be an issue with the next part.

8.Midnight eating

There is no major Romanian event without a proper meal. Curious about our dishes? Read here. Imagine that after a long period of lent people really want to eat those tasty tasty foods. Just know that after a long period of healthy eating you should ease in unhealthy food rather than a midnight feast.

9.Gifts in easter baskets

This is our way of supporting the capitalism, usually present in houses with kids. Going for egg hunting is another tradition adopted more for the sake of the unholy Easter bunny.

10.Washing you face with the water from an egg and a silver coin

On Easter morning, it is believed that it is beneficial to wash your face with fresh water from a new cup, in which you have put a red egg, a white egg, a silver coin, and a green blade of grass, indicators of health, success, and abundance in all things.

11.Blessing of the Food

The local Church offers a service on Easter morning where the food is blessed, but that means waking up early in the morning.

12.Splashing your female companions

In Transylvania, we are very cautious when it comes to our beauty routine, to the point where on the second day of Easter, women get splashed in order to maintain their beauty the whole year long. Meanwhile, you struggled with those lifting products, maybe it’s time you get more serious about it and follow the pagan path.
