Subcarpați

The band that began the trend of going back to our Romanian roots. This band combines traditional Romanian sounds with electronic music. I think the work they do in promoting other artists is even more impressive. This is from their first album and it just showcases the sound and the vibe.

Maria Răducanu

An amazing voice takes a bit from Maria Tănase our most famous singer and excels in her collaborations by producing fascinating music.

Bălănescu Cvartet

Founded by Alexander Bălănescu a Romanian dude infuse their music with Romanian inspiration here and there. As the band is formed by multiple nationalities with multiple regional flavors, saying it is Romanian is a bit misleading but saying it is not Romanian is not also true either. The song below is an amazing example, as it reinterprets an older song and uses the voice of Maria Tănase, an amazing Romanian vocalist.

Mădălina Pavăl

Diud, where’s my tune feels like the Romanian version of NPR. Mădălina Pavăl self described as singing world music, and in my opinion is that this is what Romania is all about, east meets west, latins meets slavs, Mădălina meets music.

George Enescu – Romanian Rhapsody (directed by Sergiu Celibidache)

Hard not to add it to this list, it takes a very playful orchestral tone of a very Romanian sound, George Enescu was a prodigy who did the Music University of Vienna at age 7 so you can imagine that music flowed through his veins. Sergiu Celibidache is the most famous Romanian conductor who also was brilliant. What else is there to say?
