15th December 1989, the streets of Timisoara saw people protesting the eviction of Pastor Laszlo Tokes. The protests escalated, and the repressive forces responded by firing upon the demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of several hundred protesters. On December 21st, in Bucharest, crowds gathered as summoned by Ceausescu for his speech, but they turned against him, shouting slogans. As evening fell, remaining protesters constructed barricades, prompting the regime’s forces to employ the same lethal response witnessed in Timisoara—opening fire. On December 22nd, a massive protest organized by major industrial platforms unnerved Ceausescu, leading him to escape by helicopter from the Communist Party’s Central Committee building. The dictator and his wife were later apprehended, hastily tried, and sentenced to death. The execution took place on December 25th, 1989, marking the end of Ceausescu’s rule We chose a couple movies to reflect that atmosphere of those times and how they all ended.
